Coimbatore,
city in southern India, in Tamil Nadu State, on the slopes
of the Nilgiri Hills above the Noyil River. Principal
industries of Coimbatore include the processing of coffee
and vegetable oils, leather tanning, and the manufacture of
textiles. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (1971) is here.
Near the city is the Temple of Perur, a notable Hindu
religious shrine. Population (1991) 816,321.
Coimbatore is called the 'Manchester of South India', and is
the third largest city in the state. A highly industrialised
city, it is the centre of textile manufacturing in the state
- there are over a hundred mills in and around Coimbatore.
