The most
famous film on Mahatma Gandhi's life was called 'Gandhi' and was
made by Sir Richard Attenborough in the year 1982. The role of
Gandhi was played by British actor Ben Kingsley. The film largely
deals with Gandhi's life as a lawyer, his return to India and his
role as the leader of India's non-violent freedom movement. The film
won eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, Actor and
Screenplay (by John Briley). Did you know India's only other Oscar
(besides Satyajit Ray's lifetime achievement award) was won by Bhanu
Athaiya for her costume designs for this film. Interestingly the now
famous Hollywood Star Daniel Day-Lewis, played a small role in this
movie. Lewis appeared as 'Colin', one of three youths who grab
Gandhi in the street.
Recently Indian director Shyam Benegal made a film 'The making of
the Mahatma' which deals with Gandhi's early life and his struggle
to stand up for his principles specially in South Africa.
