As a
young boy Gandhi was physically weak. He hated sports, especially
gymnastics for which one of his school teachers organized special
classes after school.
Gandhi hated these classes since he wanted to get back home to nurse
his father. He requested the teacher Mr. Gimi to exempt him from
gymnastics so that he might be free to serve his father. But the
teacher refused to listen to the boy thinking that he was just
making an excuse.
It so happened one Saturday that Gandhi had school in the morning
and was to go home and then go back to the school at 4 o' clock in
the afternoon for gymnastics. Gandhi was willing to do so but he had
no watch, and the clouds misled him. By the time he reached school
all the boys had left.
The next day Mr. Gimi, examining the roll, found Gandhi marked
absent. Being asked the reason for his absence, the young boy told
the teacher what had happened. Gimi refused to believe him and
ordered Gandhi to pay a fine (one or two annas). |
