An apple a day
keeps the doctor away---False A medium sized apple supplies only 10mg of
vitamin C compared with about 50mg in an orange. Apart from 12g of sugar (45
calories), apple have little else other than about 2g. of dietary fiber.
Large doses of vitamin C prevents
cold----Probably False A few experiments have showed that 1 or 2g. a day
seems to reduce colds. But most experiments have failed to show any
effect.
Brown bread is more nutritious
than white-----True Wholemeal bread made from the whole wheat grain
contains a lot more iron, vitamin B1, and other vitamins, and more dietary
fiber, than white bread. Brown breads are in between.
Fish is good for the
brain----False Unfortunately no food is good for the brain.
Meat is essential for
strength---False There are large number of healthy vegetarians----and
even vegetarians, who eat no animal foods at all.
Honey is especially good for
you---False Honey is only fructose (fruit sugar), glucose (grape sugar)
and water, with vitamins present in such a small amounts that they make no
worthwhile contribution to the diet.
Jam made in copper pans is better
than jam made in stainless steel----False Copper completely destroys all
the vitamin C in the fruit while jam made in stainless steel retains a little
vitamin C.
Margarine is not as nutritious as
butter----False Margarine has as much vitamin A and vitamin D as the
butter. In addition, special margarines are made from polyunsaturated fats and
so may be better than butter at keeping down cholesterol level.
Fat children become fat
adults----Probably true Less than 10 per cent of school children are
overweight compared with about 30 per cent of adults, so a fat child might
become a fat adult. Many people are fat because they have low metabolic rate and
so need fewer calories. They get fat on the average diet. A child who is fat
because he eats excessively will not be fat when he grow up unless he continues
eating excessively.
Brown eggs are more nutritious
than white----false The color of the shell is a characteristic of the
breed of chicken and nothing to do with nutritive value.
Beans cause
flatulence----True Normally people produce about 100 ml of gas each hour.
Only when more is produced do they complain. Beans and peas contain certain
sugars which the body cannot digest, so the sugars pass down the intestine where
they feed the bacteria which produce methane, hydrogen and carbon
dioxide.
Eggs should be avoided because
they are rich in cholesterol---- False Cholesterol in foods does not have
much effect on the levels in the blood because cholesterol is formed in the
body. It is true that eggs are a rich source of cholesterol, so it is generally
considered wise to keep the number down.
Drinks are not
fattening----False Certainly black tea and black coffee do not provide
any calories so they are not fattening. But when you add milk and sugar then
they provide calories. Alcohol has many calories.
Spinach is especially rich in
iron----False It contains no more iron than any other leafy
vegetables.
You must not mix protein, fat and
carbohydrates because they are digested by different enzymes---False They
are digested by different kinds of enzymes, but the stomach and small intestine
produce them at the same time. There are hardly any foods which are not mixtures
of protein, fat and carbohydrates.
Carrots make you see
better in the dark----Partly true If you are short of vitamin A, you
cannot see in dim light, an ailment called night blindness. In that case carrots
will cure you as they are rich in carotene.
Extra vitamins will lengthen your
life---False Once you have enough to maintain health, there is no benefit
in having more.
Cooking in aluminum pans is
harmful----False If any aluminum does dissolve from the pan into the food
it is very much less than the amount you would get in a stomach powder
containing aluminum hydroxide.
Vitamin E increases your sex
drive----False A shortage of vitamin E causes different disorders in
different animals. Only in rats and mice does a shortage lead to
sterility----not in human beings. It has no connection at all with sex
drive.
Dark green vegetables are
better than light-colored----True Dark green vegetables contain more
carotene, more iron and more folic acid.
Red wine gives you a
headache---True for some people Red wine ----more so than white
wine---has naturally occurring chemicals which do cause headache in some
people.
All refined and processed foods
are junk---False Refined food certainly have had some of the nutrients
removed. The term mostly applies to white flour. Processed foods, however, are
any foods which have been treated after harvesting, such as frozen vegetables or
canned meat.
Lemon juice or vinegar is good for
slimming---False There is an old tale that they shrink the stomach, but
it is untrue.
