Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is the northern most city in the Emirates. While thousands of visitors’ flock to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, not many know about this little gem tucked away. The city has a rich cultural and historical significance and can offer many beautiful historical sites to visit and it also boasts the highest peak in the UAE at 1,934 meters. The city has the gorgeous and rugged Hajar Mountains on one side. Another noteworthy fun fact is that here you will find the longest zipline in the world.

Ras Al Khaimah Fort

Up until the 1960s, this was the royal residence of the ruling family. This has now been converted into a museum that highlights the historical significance of the city. The museum has on display, traditional weapons used for centuries, as well as many archeological artifacts from the first settlements of the area. There is also a room in the museum, The Qawasim Room, which is home to many treaties and documents from the time of British protectorate.

Dhayah Fort

The ruins of Dhayah Fort are a must-visit, which is about 20 kilometers north of the city. The fort was destroyed by the British; the destruction of this fort led to the eventual signing of the first treaty between the British and the Sheikhs.

Jazirat al-Hamra

This is an abandoned fishing village a little out of the city and once also known as the Jazirah Al Zaab; as it was mainly inhabited by the members of the Zaab community, who mostly were pearl divers.  The ruin has been well preserved due to the arid and hot desert climate and gives one a nostalgic feeling about the days gone by. The village has abandoned homes and also a mosque, which is worth visiting.

Shimal

This city is very historically rich and is renowned for its Bronze Age burial sites. Among the gravesites, some of the artifacts recovered are pottery and beads which may have a link to the Indus Valley Civilization.

Khatt

This area is well known for its hot springs, which are mineral-rich, for rejuvenating and therapeutic effects. These springs have been used for centuries by the locals and now, a resort caters to the tourists looking for relaxation and spa treatments. Also, this area is home to about 170 different archeological sites, which makes it perfect, if you want to get away from the busy city exploration.

Camel Riding

Apart from the extensive archeological sites to visit, one can also indulge camels ride, steered and guided by local Bedouin guide. You can get away from the busy city life and enjoy the ride, for a minimum fifteen minutes to an hour, depending on the type of booking you have. Zipline

Jebel Jais is the longest zipline in the world; Hajar Mountain is the highest peak in the UAE and is considered an extreme sport for people who love a good adrenaline rush. The view is breathtaking and is definitely an activity that one should consider when visiting this northern city.
